1. Bite the bullet

The above expression means to do something which very complicated and unpleasant but necessary.
It will be more vivid with the help of example below.
E.g. You are going to have to bite the bullet and go for job interview to make the future bright.
A person is going for an interview to take job for making his future bright but this task is very difficult for him because he is not having any idea about the panel who will be there and what sort of question they are going to ask from him in interview but important to appear there in front of them.

2. Call it a day

This mean to stop working over something.
Again there is need to make it more clarify by one example.
E.g. It's almost 2 pm, I think we should call it a day  and submit the fee tomorrow. 
Friends visited to the bank of university for submitting fee of 4th semester. Unfortunately, time was over and they have been decided to submit the fee tomorrow.

3. Cold shoulder  

Cold shoulder means to ignore someone.
E.g. When I met my close friend after long time at the party so I got the cold shoulder from him.
Above example is conveying the message that a friend met with his old friend after long time at the party, in return his friend ignored him and did not meet like before. His behavior was not so sweet with him.

4. Couch potato 

It means a lazy person who does not do much exercise and spend a lot of time at the sofa watching television.
E.g. My friend has turned into a couch potato since he lost his job.
A person is narrating his thought with another guy and expressing that my friend became very lazy and always stayed at home without doing any work after losing his job.

Hence, expression is phrase of few words which perform a role in precising of conversation. As well as, make the sound natural.
